Porto, Portugal

Located on Rua de São João, the first hotel of the Jasmin Group results from the conversion of an 18th-century building in downtown Porto into a boutique hotel. The building will have a total area of 1,200 m² and will include 28 rooms. Built in the 18th century, the structure reflects the stylistic and architectural layout typical of the city’s bourgeois palaces of that period. The works, initially scheduled to last 18 months, were significantly extended due to the challenges inherent to interventions in protected areas. However, the rehabilitation and original concept remain unchanged, demonstrating the timeless nature of PPS interventions. The refurbishment, carried out by PPS, preserves original decorative elements such as tiles and plaster ceilings from the former chapel. The developed concept draws primarily from the historical context in which the palace was built, converging on the idea of an Emporium.

Having previously operated as a trading post, the building retained service structures that also served as inspiration for the development of the project. Combining a classical aesthetic with contemporary cosmopolitan elements, the PPS project for this hotel stands out through an eclectic mix of styles, blending period-inspired furniture with modern tables and chairs. In the rooms, the wall art showcases pieces representative of PPS’s approach and style. The presence of backlit classical portraits, marked by a bold and contemporary brushstroke across the gaze, turns the figures into silent accomplices to whatever unfolds within the room. The public areas are located on the ground floor, where a lobby bar and breakfast area are planned. A rehabilitation project of this nature, in a protected urban area with architectural elements to preserve, requires meticulous work and a systematic approach from the design team to develop technical solutions capable of addressing the challenges involved.

The interior architecture project was developed in collaboration with architect João Figueiroa | B229.
